Drying Carpet
A primary concern of water damage in a home or business is the effect it will have on the carpet or flooring. ServiceMaster Professionals provides on-site carpet, tile, and hardwood floor drying.
A number of things must be considered when drying flooring in a home or office. First, the age and condition of the carpet is taken into account, because in some cases, it can be more cost effective to replace the carpet than to restore it. Your ServiceMaster Professionals technician will advise you and help determine the value of your carpeting. Second, the length of time the carpet was exposed to water must be considered. Most types of carpet can resist water for up to three days, but the sooner the water damage is addressed, the better. Third, the type of water effecting the carpet will affect the restoration process. We categorize water in three ways: Clean Water, Grey Water, and Black Water. Clean water comes from a clean source and has no debris. Grey water is not clean, but it is also not hazardous (i.e. dishwasher, washing machine overflow). Black water is sewage backup or runoff water, both of which are hazardous and must be handled with caution. Finally, the temperature of the water is taken into account. For example, hot water can affect the glue that holds the carpet fibers together. Again, our technicians will guide you through this process and help to determine what course of action needs to be taken in your specific situation.
Drying Hardwood Floors
When drying hardwood floors, the process is critical. Hardwood flooring is very sensitive and must be handled with care. Hardwood naturally holds some water (up to 10%), but an additional 5-10% can be absorbed without any visible effects. Once the flooring is filled to capacity, however, the wood will begin to expand, causing cupping or crowning. Both are extremely difficult to restore, therefore it is essential to get the water cleared and the drying initiated as soon as possible after a loss.
